“Should I advertise on Facebook, Google or TikTok?” It is the first question almost every Malaysian business owner asks us – and the honest answer is: it depends on how your customers buy. Each platform plays a different role. Choose by customer intent and your sales process, not by what is trending on your feed.

Below is a plain-English comparison, followed by a simple way to split your first RM5,000 test budget.

Meta (Facebook & Instagram) ads

Meta remains the workhorse for Malaysian SMEs because of its reach and detailed targeting. You can reach people by location (down to a radius around your outlet), interests, behaviours and lookalike audiences built from your customer list.

  • Strengths: broad reach, flexible formats, click-to-WhatsApp ads, strong retargeting.
  • Watch out for: low-quality leads from instant forms if you do not qualify them. Ask one or two screening questions.
  • Great for: clinics, tuition centres, F&B promotions, property launches, e-commerce stores.

Google Ads

Google captures demand that already exists. When someone searches “aircond repair Bangsar” or “company secretarial services KL”, they have a problem and want it solved now. Conversion rates are often higher than on social, but clicks can cost more in competitive categories.

  • Strengths: high purchase intent, easy to track ROI, location targeting, call and WhatsApp extensions.
  • Watch out for: broad match keywords that burn budget. Start with tight match types and add negative keywords from day one.
  • Great for: home services, B2B, legal and finance, automotive, any business customers search for by name or need.

TikTok ads

TikTok is no longer just for teenagers; in Malaysia it is a major discovery engine across age groups, and TikTok Shop has turned views into purchases. The platform rewards authentic, entertaining, creator-style content over polished commercials.

  • Strengths: cheap reach, strong virality potential, integration with TikTok Shop.
  • Watch out for: you will need a steady flow of fresh video. One creative will not carry a campaign for long.
  • Great for: beauty, fashion, snacks and F&B, gadgets, anything demonstrable in 15–30 seconds.

How to split your first RM5,000

This is an example framework, not a rule. Adjust it to your business model, margins and sales cycle.

If you sell services people actively search for

  • RM3,000 on Google Search (tightly targeted keywords)
  • RM1,500 on Meta retargeting and lead ads
  • RM500 on creative and landing page improvements

If you sell products or run a local consumer business

  • RM2,500 on Meta prospecting (offer-led creative, click-to-WhatsApp if relevant)
  • RM1,000 on Meta retargeting
  • RM1,000 on TikTok to test creative angles
  • RM500 on Google Search for brand and high-intent keywords

Whatever the split, commit to a minimum test window of 3–4 weeks. Switching strategy every few days stops the platforms from learning and makes your data unreadable.

What to measure before you scale

  1. Cost per lead or cost per purchase, compared with the profit you make from each customer.
  2. Lead quality: how many leads reply, show up and buy?
  3. Return on ad spend (ROAS) for e-commerce, and ideally contribution margin after ad cost.
  4. Creative performance: which hooks and offers produce the cheapest quality results?

Set up conversion tracking (Meta Pixel and Conversions API, Google tag and GA4) before spending a single ringgit; otherwise you are flying blind. If you need help, our team manages paid ads across Meta, Google and TikTok with transparent reporting in RM, and our SME starter plan shows how ads fit into the bigger picture.
